A Deep Dive into the Landscape of Data Centers in India

India is facing a digital revolution that is reshaping the nation’s future. With digital-first companies blooming for a digitally eager population, the digital landscape in India is flourishing like never before. This growth is fueled by a blend of factors—government support, cutting-edge digital infrastructure, pioneering digital assets like UPI, Aadhar, and ONDC, and many other digital services across various sectors. It's an exciting time for us, STT GDC India – the nation’s market leader for colocation services with the largest footprint of data centres in the country, are proud to be leading the charge.

The cloud, a cornerstone of the digital domain, is soaring with over 30% annual growth, while data centres, crucial for large-scale cloud operations, are not far behind with a 20% growth rate. It's a testament to the vibrant ecosystem that's being built, with more than $25 Billion earmarked for enhancing digital infrastructure in the next few years alone. When you consider India's digital potential compared to other major economies, we're just scratching the surface. There's room to grow at least 3-4 times from where we stand today and by 2030, the sector's capacity is expected to surpass 3GW.

STT GDC India's Market Share

Mumbai, India's commercial
centre, leads this expansion with over half of the country's current and planned data centre facilities. Yet, the growth is not limited to Mumbai alone; cities like Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Delhi NCR are swiftly becoming key players in this domain. It is safe to say that this is a nationwide digital evolution, and we, STT GDC India, are right at its core. Amidst this competitive landscape, we emerge as a market leader, commanding an impressive 30% market share in terms of revenue. With 28 facilities across 10 cities, adding up to more than 318MW of IT load—including those under development—we at STT GDC India are pioneers in this transformative era. Leveraging our global expertise with local reach, we're geared up to meet the surging demand for data services, drive digital transformation, and propel the Indian industry forward.

Committed to industry leadership, we prioritise data security and privacy. Our stringent protocols and advanced technologies ensure compliance and safeguard the integrity of sensitive data. By prioritizing privacy, we build trust and contribute to a secure digital ecosystem.

Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023

At STT GDC India, we recognise the paramount importance of data security and privacy in today's digital landscape. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 underscores the importance of lawful, secure data processing and compliance. It aims to create a secure environment for digital engagement by establishing clear guidelines for cross-border data flows and upholding global data protection standards.

The protection of data's integrity and privacy is essential, not just for individuals but for companies too. Initiatives like the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and other related guidelines are essential steps being taken globally to address these concerns, focusing on the security, integrity, and privacy of user data. For us, safeguarding customer data is a cornerstone in fostering trust and encouraging global players to invest and expand in India. With data localisation mandates increasing the need for data centres, cloud, and storage services, we're poised to meet this demand, contributing significantly to the Indian market's growth.

We, at STT GDC India, believe that as the digital ecosystem evolves, defining the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, including cloud, managed services, and data centre infrastructure providers, becomes crucial. Clarity on our responsibilities, liabilities, and breach notification obligations is key to building a balanced and sustainable digital ecosystem.

Green Data
Centres

At STT GDC India, sustainability isn't just a part of our business model—it's at the core of everything we do. Our commitment to green initiatives and corporate social responsibility is guided by principles of leadership and transparency.

Currently, over a third of the power for our Indian facilities comes from renewable sources like solar and wind, and we're on track to increase this to over 50% in the next 2-3 years. Our electricity consumption is from zero-carbon renewable sources and by 2030, we aim to become carbon-neutral. This shift helps us avoid over 176,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, with our efficient operations adding another 26,000 tons in savings. We also prioritize water conservation, employing rainwater harvesting and recycling methods to maintain one of the lowest water usage effectiveness rates in the region.

By implementing innovative green initiatives, we proudly stand as a recipient of prestigious awards, including the CII EHS Excellence Award , the Green DC Initiatives (Environmental) Award . Along with IGBC certification for our Data centres at GIFT City Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. These awards serve as a testament to our dedication to creating a greener, more sustainable future while delivering top-notch services.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the operational and regulatory challenges faced by us, the support from state and central governments has been a major positive, recognizing the critical role of data centres in India's digital growth. States like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have led the way with dedicated data centre policies and incentives. The establishment of single-window clearance systems and the industry's inclusion in the harmonized list of infrastructure sectors are significant achievements. However, reducing the approval times, especially for environmental clearances, remains an area for improvement, as we work towards streamlining these processes to expedite project timelines.

The way forward for STT GDC India

STT GDC India's path forward is intricately woven with its core values of striving for excellence, delivering consistency, and being socially responsible. We pride ourselves on our two-decade legacy of excellence in designing, building, and operating state-of-the-art data centres. Holding a formidable 30% market share by revenue, we are poised to harness the digital growth momentum sweeping through India. Our portfolio boasts over 318MW of critical IT load spread across 28 facilities, including several in development, across 10 key Indian cities. Notably, our campuses in Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, and Noida rank among the country's largest, each with the potential to scale beyond 100MW of IT load capacity. The upcoming months are especially exciting for us, with a new hyperscale data centre campus of over 100MW in Mumbai and an expansion of more than 40MW in Pune set to become operational.

Looking ahead,
we've earmarked substantial investments for the next 3-5 years to boost our capacity by an additional 200 to 250MW, targeting the years 2024-25 as pivotal milestones in our expansion journey. Additionally, our purpose-built facilities are fully equipped to support AI, accommodating high power densities of 20-30 KW per rack. For even more demanding requirements, we offer liquid-cooled setups tailored to our customers' needs. Our partnerships with High-Performance Computing (HPC) OEMs drive the concept of Sustainable AI Factories globally. Liquid-cooled GPU setups are already operational in Singapore and India, with expansion plans on a global scale.

Conclusion
The landscape of data centres in India is dynamic and filled with opportunities. As the digital economy continues to expand, the demand for reliable, secure, and efficient data centre services will only increase.
