STT GDC India won the Energy Efficient Unit (Buildings) for its STT Chennai DC2 data centre at the 21st CII National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2020, held from 26 to 28 August 2020.
We won this award on account of our consistent management of hyperscale data centres while continuously prioritizing sustainable initiatives for differentiated business operations.

Our sustainable practices at STT Chennai DC2 enabled us to gain a competitive edge to bag this prestigious award. In all our management procedures, sustainability is key as we prioritize effective utilization of scarce resources like water and energy. Going green has never been just a trend for us, it is an inherent responsibility that all of us carry with sincerity.
CII contenders included big industry names in the Energy Efficient Unit (Buildings) category. However, this nomination feature was for our Chennai Data Centre’s (Ambattur) green initiatives concerning energy and water savings, which made the building Energy Efficient with Consistency on PUE (1.5). This resulted in getting us the most prestigious country level award from the CII, which comprises of an elite panel of jury members having the most prominent industry veterans, including IAS and state secretaries, who evaluated the compiled data and awarded the selections. Accreditations, such as this, resonate with the unparalleled quality of our services and sustainable business models.
STT Chennai DC2 has been committed towards reducing its carbon footprint and help save the environment through a green data centre structure. Our sustainable efforts include using 60% of site energy from renewable resources, reduced CO2 emission factor of 54 million kg per annum, 100KL RO plant to reuse 50% chiller cooling tower blowdown water, saving 18 MLD of water per annum, rainwater harvesting, management of hazardous waste, and using recycled water for non-potable purposes. STT Chennai DC2 is India’s biggest sustainable approach for a future-proof data centre structure.

Operating since 2010, STT Chennai DC2 is now India’s largest colocation data centre in a production environment with a design capacity of IT load – 20MW. The centre is Rated 3 and LEED Gold certified facility and uses more than 60% of its power through green resources such as wind and solar.
